Monday, January 16 is the General Meeting for CFUW Oakville. The Keynote speaker will be Dr. Laurel Trainor of McMaster University's Department of Psychology, Neuroscience & Behaviour. The topic is: How Music Affect Brain Development.

Teri Shaw has volunteered to have her name stand for nomination to the position of CFUW National Vice President, Advocacy for another term. Presently, Teri is CFUW Ontario Council Advocacy Coordinator and CFUW National Vice President, Advocacy. Teri was CFUW Oakville President in 2001.
On Monday, members will be asked to vote on a motion to nominate Teri as Vice President, Advocacy on the CFUW National Board. Below are highlights of Teri's Advocacy experience.

What happened at National:
· Resolutions – advocacy
o   Create the tool-kits for resolution advocacy
o   The highlight this year is Irwin Cotler's Private member's bill on Non-State Torture

· Working with parliament
o   Briefs to Finance on the Budget
o   Called to speak to the Committee on the Status of Women to speak on the long-form census;
o   Called to speak to the Liberal Women's Caucus
o   Major campaign on the Gun Registry over the past two years; won the battle, but ultimately lost the war
o   A number of one-on-one MP meetings, including the Minister of the Status of Women's office
o   National creates packages of template letters and information sheets for clubs on a number of topics

· Working with NGOs
o   Projects with a number of them, like Elizabeth Fry on the current Crime Omnibus Bill; on projects for International Women's Day; with the Grandmothers to Grandmothers concerning Canada's Access to Medicine Regime, for example
o   Working with the Ad Hoc Coalition for Women's Equality and Human Rights, a roundtable of national women's organization. We are attempting to support it in some fashion as funding is being cut for most of the organizations

· Working with clubs & club members:
o   Campaigns – "Policy to Action" establish a new method to use policy rather than just create new resolutions every year
o   Study groups – Aboriginal Study Group, Afghan Focus Group and the Child Care Initiative
o   Issue Liaisons – reviving a project involving members monitoring issues for us.

· What do I do:
o   As mentioned earlier, the Strategic Plan and two studies; created and work with the Advocacy Committee; established policies and projects
o   Assist and work with the advocacy Standing Committees
o   Vet letters and activities
o   Assist with the new website

Our CFUW Oakville Executive has already been hard at work preparing for an exciting 2011-2012 year! We have an excellent programme slated for your interest.

Our Speaker: Professor Mary-Lu Zahalan, Sheridan Institute of Technology and Advanced Learning a graduate of Liverpool Hope University with a master's degree in a programme that studied The Beatles will discuss "The Music of the Beatles".

Our first meeting is Monday, September 19, 2011, starting at 6:30pm with membership renewal, interest group signup up and social hour at the Operating Engineers Hall 2245 Speers Road, Oakville.

Please consider inviting a guest! Our Club has engaging and attractive activities, opportunities and causes to spark anyone's interests.

Membership renewal: To ease the membership renewal process each member has been sent a prefilled renewal membership form. If you have not received your form please contact me.

IMPORTANT NOTES:

We require that your membership renewal be completed prior to signing up for Interest Groups. If you are unable to attend the September meeting please send your renewal forms and cheques via mail ASAP.
Please note that the method of signing up for Interest Groups has changed. Unlike other years, each Interest Group Convenor must have a representative to sit at an interest group table, beginning at 6:30pm to sign up both new and long-term members.
In order for our club to remain vital, inclusive, and welcoming, we need to incorporate new members into the interest groups. Therefore, all interest groups must accept any new members who sign up by the October General Meeting. It is up to each convenor how these new members will be absorbed into the group. Some groups may enlarge while others will perhaps divide into two groups

The Oakville Riding breakfast meeting will take place on Wednesday September 21 at Otello's Banquet and Conference Centre, 2273 Royal Windsor Drive, Oakville. All candidates have been invited to participate. The following candidates have confirmed their participation: Kevin Flynn (Liberal), Lesley Sprague (NDP), and Mike Harris (Independent).

Registration and breakfast will start at 7:30 am. The program will begin with opening statements by the candidates and then questions from the floor, followed by closing statements from candidates and wrapping up by 9:30 am.

These meetings are open to everyone. Please invite your friends and neighbors to attend with you. Since CFUW is non profit tickets will be sold to cover breakfast expenses. CFUW Oakville is hosting two All Candidates Breakfast Meetings in September.

CFUW Condolences - Judith Aspinall

Judith died on Friday morning, June 10, at Oakville Trafalgar Memorial Hospital. She had been struggling with Lupus for many years and died from complications of the disease. Judith is remembered for her gentle manner, her love of art, ballet and books and her cheery disposition. She is survived by her three sons and many family members.

Please join us on Monday evening April 18th from 7:00 to 8:00 for a sit down Spring Tea Party prior to our General Meeting! We will be featuring a performance by The Halton Youth Symphony.

Our guest speaker for the evening will be June Cockwell who will trace the development of literacy, the effects of early experiences on brain architecture and the implications of deficits in development. Please bring a Food Bank donation (canned or dry goods).

Tickets will be on sale for our CFUW -Oakville Annual Meeting & Dinner on May 9th. Our guest speaker will be Elizabeth Miller on "Life with Dracula: the Good, the Bad, and the Downright Crazy."

As previously announced in April In Touch, we will be doing more voting! We must give direction to our incoming President, Anne Douglas, as to how she will vote on our behalf at the National AGM in August. There will be three motions on resolutions, one for each of the National Resolutions and one for the revised Mental Health resolution which our club has sent to CFUW Ontario Council. As previously announced, we will also be giving direction to Anne on how she should vote on our behalf in August, regarding the new proposed National Constitution. A motion passed by our Executive reads: "That the proposed Revision of the Canadian Federation of University Women Constitution be approved at the 2011 Annual General Meeting, and that the proposed Revision of the Canadian Federation of University Women Bylaws and Schedules labelled August 2011 be approved with the suggested amendments." Please read the attachment for more information and the recommendations of the Executive.

Our business portion of the meeting will follow the speaker, allowing us time to break into workshops to discuss the two proposed National resolutions. The resolutions were printed in this month's In Touch.

I have attached a copy of the new Constitution proposed by CFUW National. We are currently forming a committee to review this proposal, on which our club will vote in August at the National AGM. This version is an attempt to incorporate the bylaw amendments which we have already voted upon and clarify the language.

Taking off the blinders: the four pillars of poverty

CFUW Oakville is proud to be hosting this year’s Ontario Council Annual General Meeting. In addition to the business meeting and networking opportunities, there will also be a keynote speaker and workshops that will focus on a very important topic — the four pillars of poverty: income security; food security; mental health; and affordable housing.

Our goal for this program is to help members take the blinders off with respect to recognizing poverty and its causes in their own communities.

We want to give you a safe forum to learn about and talk about what’s happening in your neighborhoods and then provide ideas and examples of current successful initiatives.

CFUW has a long history of successful advocacy and we hope that by providing constructive dialogue, tools and suggestions, our members can help to spur on some significant local changes.

The program will be anchored by Dr. Joey Edwardh, the Executive Director of Community Development Halton. Dr Edwardh will give the keynote address and then delegates will break into one of four pre-selected workshops. The workshops will run through a second cycle before everyone reconvenes to summarize the discussions and ideas. Each of the workshop leaders will summarize their two sessions. Dr. Edwardh will facilitate this process.

Our speaker on the February 28, 2011, general meeting will be Bruce Wood

Books as Theatre

Our speaker for is Bruce Woods, playwrite, actor and author of Canadian Best Seller, "Between Two Women, A Canadian Story" and its sequel, "Between Two Worlds, A Canadian Story"

His first book takes us back 65 years to small town Ontario, the very familiar Stratford that we all know and love. It is a docu-drama that removes his reader to another time and place yet tells a story to which we can all relate. Family eccentricities, romance and hijinks make his book a page turner.

In person, Woods' humour and story telling captivates his audience and gives us a window on a time that we've almost forgotten. Be prepared to laugh a little and shed a tear on those issues that really matter.

Reader response prompted Woods to write his second book which picks up where he left off in 1948. Woods ultimately became a Baptist minister to the surprise of his Stratford contemporaries. His Tom Sawyer experiences that make up the first book gave no indication of such inclination. His first book he labels, "Growing up in A small town. In his second he relates Canadiana and the people he met. Be prepared for a surprise. Rika Noda a playmate of his children when he lived in Vancouver turns out to be Terry Fox's girlfriend and the most influential person in his life. Meet a few more amazing Canadians as well. One reader said, "I liked your first book, I liked the second even better."

Informative and inspirational, be prepared for a lively question period after his talk.

SHAND, Audrey Patricia (nee Batchelor)
January 21, 2011 in Oakville, Ont. in the loving company of her sons James and John.

Pat was a devoted wife to her husband Rodger (departed) and mother to James and his wife Colette and John and his wife Denice. Daughter of William and Gertrude Batchelor; predeceased by her brother Thomas John Batchelor; grandmother to Alexandra and Brooke, and loving aunt to Bruce, Stuart, Robert, Patrick, Brooke, Amanda and Anthony.

Pat was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba on December 24, 1926. She graduated from the University of Manitoba in 1948 and worked as a dietician in Montreal and Toronto, and married Rodger in 1952. From 1964-1971, Rodger's work with Ferro Enamels took their family to India.

Patricia was active in the University Women's Club and local libraries throughout her life. Pat and Rodger retired to Long Point, Ontario and she returned to live in Oakville after Rodger's death.
Pat's kindness and generosity will be missed. The family is grateful to all who helped with calls and visits during the last 4 months. We will all remember her lively and generous spirit.

A funeral will be held at Kopriva- Taylor Funeral Home, 64 Lakeshore Rd. W., Oakville, on Thursday, January 27 at 1:00 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, a donation to your favourite charity will be appreciated.

accomplishment who helped to carve the wilderness for future generations of Canadians.
They too experienced the hardship of a journey into the unknown, the rigors of war and
confrontations with enemy forces beside their men and in support of their cause.

Speaker: Michaela Schwandner

Michaela Schwandner is the Coordinator for the Halton Violence Prevention Council and Clinical Coordinator for Burlington Counselling and Family Services. She has many years of experience working in Children’s Mental Health, mainly with high-risk teenagers and their families. Michaela immigrated to Canada 5 years ago. She worked as a therapist at Burlington Counselling and Family Services for 4 years and has recently become a Coordinator for HVPC.

The Halton Violence Prevention Council has 20-25 member organizations that provide a range of services for families who experience any kind of violence or abuse, including domestic violence, sexual assault and child abuse. Our members include violence against women services, child welfare, counselling agencies, health services, education, justice, legal services and others. The focus of the council is to coordinate and improve services for victims of domestic violence and their children as well as raising awareness in the public about women abuse.

Micaela will speak to us about the Neighbours, Friends and Families campaign, a province wide campaign intended to raise awareness about women abuse. It provides information on recognizing warning signs of women abuse, how to support woman who experience abuse and information on appropriate community resources. This campaign involves giving presentations on the topic and providing the public with educational material, handouts and brochures.

The meeting will be held at the Banquet Hall of the International Union of Operating Engineers Operating Engineers Hall, 2245 Speers Road (west of Third Line). Social hour: 7:00 p.m.; meeting: 8:00 p.m. This meeting is open to prospective members.

This will be an orientation meeting. Myra Willis, President of Ontario Council will outline her goals and objectives for the meeting and we'll take a look at the program elements and some of the planning tasks.

Welcome Back!

This is a reminder that our first General Meeting of the year will be held on Monday evening, September 20th at the Operating Engineers Hall, same place as last year. The doors will open at 7:00 P.M. for coffee and reacquainting with our friends. Tables will be set up for interest group signup and annual club registration. The business portion of the meeting will begin promptly at 8:00 P.M.

We are very excited to have Professor Howard Gerry, an artist, designer, and professor with the Ontario College of Art and Design, for our speaker for the evening. His theme will be "Beyond Accessibility -towards an Inclusive Environment". Howard is sure to present us with a thought-provoking session that has the potential to alter how we perceive our physical and social environments.

After a short, but intensive, search for a new executive director for CFUW, we are pleased to announce that the selection committee (Patricia Duval, Brenda Wallace and Doris Mae Oulton) has presented a candidate to the Board and this candidate has been approved.

ROBIN JACKSON brings more than 20 years of experience working in the not-for-profit sector with extensive experience and knowledge in advocacy, governance and board practices, administration and new public initiatives.

She was Executive Director of the Canadian Independent Film and Video Fund from 1991 to 2009, managing their contract process for more than 1,000 projects and increasing the initial $1 million funding to a budget of $20.4 million annually, before their funding was cut this year. She is currently at the Development Office of the University of Ottawa. She has worked within government at the Canadian Radio-Television and Telecommunications Commission and with Department of Canadian Heritage,

She has extensive volunteer passions, including the Humane Societies, Big Sisters and Big Brothers Association, and the Canadian Women in Communications, amongst many more.

She is computer literate and bilingual with an Honours B.A. French Literature from Carleton University, and a B.L.S. (Library/Information Science) from University of Ottawa as well graduating from the Not- for-Profit Governance Essentials Program (2008) from the Institute of Corporate Directors, Rotman School of Management, University of Toronto & the Telfer School of Management, University of Ottawa.

The selection committee was impressed with the caliber of candidates from which we were able to choose. We were most impressed with the knowledge that Robin brings both of the non-profit sector and her knowledge of advocacy approaches for influencing policy. We believe she will make an important contribution to CFUW as we move forward. Robin will be joining us on July 5^th and will meet many of you at the AGM in Ottawa.

Call for action.

Cuts from Status of Women Canada to women's organisation.

There have been several areas where CFUW has taken action either alone or in Coalition with other women's groups as a key member of the Ad Hoc Coalition for Women's Equality and Human Rights.

1.    Cuts to groups working for programs on women's equality and human rights have happened with great speed since January 2010. Some of you may have heard the radio and TV interviews made with members of the Coalition that have been defunded.

2.    You may wish to circulate the attached release locally or use it to write to your local MP and ask her or him why women are being targeted for defunding. Some groups have been defunded by Status of Women Canada (example: Canadian Research Institute for the Advancement of Women) – for no apparent reason since they met the current criteria. Others, like MATCH International were defunded by CIDA – in part because of the work that they support overseas in reproductiv e health care services.

3.    You will note also that women's groups are the canary in the coal-mine and that they are first in-line. However, some of you may have noticed that human rights groups have also been defunded (KAIROS and Human Rights offices).

4.    What can I do?

-       Watch what is happening on the news and in the media
-       Let your local members know about what is happening (share this release with your members)
-       Contact your local MP to suggest that you do not support this.

Included in this mailing is a "Gun Control" kit. We can expect to see a final vote on this issue which CFUW has supported since 1994. Again contact your MP and let them know that this is something that you support. MPs are saying that they have not heard from you.

Canadians for a Nuclear

Weapons Convention

501 members of the Order of Canada have joined an initiative led by John Polanyi C.C., Douglas Roche, O.C., and Murray Thompson calling for international negotiations to achieve a Nuclear Weapons convention – a verifiable Treaty on the prohibition and elimination of nuclear weapons.

At a reception on the Hill on Monday April 19 representatives from the Order, Parliamentarians and sponsoring organizations, including CFUW, Pugwash, Physicians for Global Survival met to pledge support for this intiative.

Now is the time for Civil Society to support that effort and to show our politicians that we believe in the importance of this moment. Sample letters and information on this important initiative will be posted here soon!

On Monday, April 19 John Mighton, author, playwright, mathematician and educator will be talking to us about JUMP (Junior Undiscovered Math Prodigies).

JUMP Math is a numeracy program started in 1998 by mathematician, author and award-winning playwright John Mighton.

JUMP Math believes that all children can be led to think mathematically, and that with even a modest amount of attention every child will flourish. By demonstrating that even children who are failing math or who are labeled as slow learners can excel at math, we hope to dispel the myths that currently prevail. We offer educators and parents complete and balanced materials as well as training to help them reach all students.

Please join us on April 19 to learn more about what can be done to improve mathematical skills in our children.

Notice to CFUW-Oakville re: Power Plant Rally - March 2, 2010

At the last CFUW- Oakville general meeting on Feb 22, the club passed the following motion:

Given that CFUW passed a policy in 2009 urging the Government of Canada and the provincial, territorial and municipal governments to protect the health of Canadians by reducing their exposure to environmental toxins through measures that:

a. strengthen and enforce regulations that require all those who produce, use, distribute, and/or disseminate toxic or potentially toxic materials to show due diligence to protection of human health and the environment;

b. enhance monitoring programs and research into effective control of the distribution, dissemination, disposal and offshore discharge of environmental toxins,

AND,

“Given that Ontario has no legal enforceable regulations on the important air toxin PM2.5, nor enforceable setbacks in place for gas-fired power plants, CFUW-Oakville urges the Ontario Provincial government to enforce a moratorium on the building of gas-fired power plants in Ontario until :

i) enforceable regulations on PM2.5 and other air toxins are established in Ontario, and

ii) safe setbacks for gas-fired plants are established, and

iii) other options for power generation that are less harmful to human health and the environment have been thoroughly explored as alternatives, and

iv) the selection criteria and processes for determining sites of power generation facilities are made transparent to the public.”

A Rally sponsored by the umbrella residents’ group C4CA is being held at Queen’s Park to draw attention to these regulatory gaps and the urgency of the situation (details below). There is a real danger that, if not enough people attend the rally, the government will conclude the general community is just fine with the proposed plant-- and that is NOT the truth.

QUEEN’S PARK! HERE WE COME!

Join your community and others for a peaceful mass Rally at Queen’s Park on Tuesday March 2^nd 2010 at 12noon. We need to keep the pressure on the McGuinty government – there are real concerns about the province’s plans for gas-fired power plants. We need our government to do its job and protect us. The process for evaluating potential sites is flawed. There are no standards or regulations on setbacks or air emissions. On a local level, the Oakville site just does not make good sense - health and safety are at risk. It is too close to homes and schools and the airshed in the area is already overtaxed.

C4CA will be providing free bus transportation to and from Queen’s Park that day. Please visit the Citizens for Clean Air website www.c4ca.org after Wednesday February 17^th to get information and to register for a seat on one of the buses. Buses will leave at 10:30am, and will return to Oakville at about 2pm. There are four locations to choose from. You must register for the bus transportation by Sat Feb 27 at 5pm to be guaranteed a seat on a bus. See www.c4ca.org

Bring signs. Bring noisemakers. Dress for the weather. The Rally itself will run for about an hour starting at noon. Washrooms are extremely limited.

I am a member of CFUW Brampton and I would like to extend an invitation to you and members of your club to our spring fashion show. The fashion show will be held on Sun. April 25/2010 at the Brampton Golf Club. The fashion show is our main fundraiser to provide a scholarship to a female graduating student at every secondary school in Brampton. This year, we expect to provide scholarships to 19 schools.

After Copenhagen

The Copenhagen Conference on climate change has come and gone, with no firm commitments were made. It is a time for CFUW to continue its efforts. With new insight and determination, CFUW members need to hold meeting in our Clubs, meet once again with MPs, write letters to Ministers and to the media. The issue of climate change is not going away, even though the conference doors at Copenhagen have long since closed.

The Department of Finance has launched its online consultations for the 2010 Federal Budget. Tell Harper and Flaherty what we want to see in this year's budget and that they need to do something about the gender bias of stimulus spending. Gun Control Update

Although Parliament has been prorouged and all government bills have died, private members bills remain alive and well; including C-391, the act to dismantle the gun registry.

The bill goes before the Public Safety Committee in March, the CUFW will be testifying before it. It is as important to contact your MP and tell them you support gun control and the long gun registry. If your MP voted against the bill, congratulate them and ask them to encourage their colleagues to vote against this bill. It is too important for them to simply vote against, they need to lobby their colleagues on your behalf!

With this in mind, we have made the decision to delay the launch of our pilot book club until February 3rd. We apologize for any inconvenience.

Message to Members Regarding CFUW National Governance

Dear Members, Thank you so much for your patience on the very complex issue of the governance model for our national CFUW Board. The general meeting on Monday evening was very lively and the nine votes for our club in favour of maintaining the current structure (and rejecting the proposed amended structure) is on its way to HQ. Darla did an admirable job in presenting the issue in a clear and succinct manner.

I have spoken to Elizabeth Haynes who headed up the committee which proposed the new but rejected models, and she is very willing to hear our views, even at this late date. Therefore, I am asking that you submit your comments to me (mrudzik@cogeco.ca) and I will write a report on behalf of the club.

I now include some of my own thoughts on this issue:

While we have a very strong operation at the national Board level, there is always room for improvement. From an external point of view, any organization with an annual budget of over half a million dollars and the rather daunting responsibility of speaking, democratically, to governments at all levels on behalf of approximately 10,000 educated women, should operate more smoothly than the current national CFUW seems to do. I understand that the impetus to look at the Board structure did occur before the deficit, and I see our participation in the recent debate as a positive step in raising awareness of the governance issue. However, I can see some real problems that are not addressed in the current operating model.

All of our clubs at the local level appear to have a Vice-President who is learning on the job in order that she can take over as President. This ensures that there is a smooth transition and that no great learning period ensues when that transition takes place. It is a very sensible (and widely used) structure which does not pertain to our current national Board. Maybe we should elect a President - Elect rather than a President.

Furthermore, there appears to be no orientation planning, and the new Board President (as well as new Board member) has to be up and running from the take over. I have never been on a Board yet which did not provide for a period of orientation for new members. All the Boards I have ever served on agree that this is time invested was well spent.

Also, to whom do the Regional Directors report? We have now voted to have an additional RD for Ontario. However, the RDs report to the Board via their provincial VP which would seem to put a larger portion of work load on that provincial VP who speaks for the largest membership (Ontario accounts for approx 60% of the national membership), so I do not see an equitable distribution of the workload. I won't even mention self evaluation of the Board (which was being discussed in 2003/4)!

Those are just for starters. Many of our members have expressed very strong opinions that the current Board structure could be altered without too much strain, so I am inviting you to let me have your comments.

CFUW National Governance

National Governance

At the national level of CFUW, there are proposed by-law amendments affecting the governance of the national organization. Each club has the opportunity to vote on the by-law amendments. CFUW Oakville, based on our size of membership, has 9 votes. In order to meet the timeline, we will be reviewing the amendments and voting at our general meeting on Monday, January 18^th.

Our club struck an adhoc committee to look at the amendments in detail and report back to the club with recommendations. We are fortunate to have a Past National President and a current member of the national board within our membership who have both agreed to participate on the committee. The chair of the committee is Darla Campbell and the members are Roberta Brooks, Teri Shaw, Lilla Amm, Maureen Rudzik and Marlene Bristol. Darla will make a presentation at the January 18^th meeting with recommendations from the committee and answer questions.

On Monday evening meeting, November 16, 2009, the club will hold the official election for the new President of the National CFUW.

The election is between Marylea Burtt and Brenda Wallace. Their experience and views for the future direction of the CFUW are attached here and are available on the web site. Further their announcements for the nomination will be on display at the hall on Monday.

PLEASE pick up your ballot BEFORE the meeting.

The Oakville CFUW has 9 votes allotted to us and all these votes will go to the winner -- who takes all.

National 2009 President Election

CFUW Oakville will vote on Monday November 16 for the CFUW National president.

The two candidates are Marylea Burtt and Brenda Wallace

At the Oakville meeting we will be handing out ballots to current members. There will be a short presentation about each candidate and then the voting will take place. The secret ballots will be counted and the Oakville supported candidate will be announced. Oakville has nine votes in this election and all nine will be cast for the candidate voted on Monday.

Marylea has worked tirelessly for over 35 years to promote CFUW. She has been President of Belleville & District for two terms, treasurer for two terms and is the current archivist. It is partly as a result of Marylea’s consistent involvement that our club has flourished. She chaired the first three years of the very successful CFUW Belleville & District Garden Tour, which is now in its eleventh year. She spearheaded the Christmas Silent Auction which has raised a total of $10,000 to promote club development. She has also been actively involved in many interest groups.
Provincially, Marylea has been Ontario Council Treasurer for one term and Regional Director, Ontario East for two terms.
At the national level, Marylea was CFUW Conference Chair in 1970, Director of Communications & Chair of Membership Services for 1 year, has served as Director of Membership for the past four years and has been a National Workshop Facilitator on three occasions.
As a hard worker Marylea produces results. She is a strong CFUW Board Member and is always promoting CFUW principles and ideals.
In her life outside of CFUW, Marylea has proved to be a dedicated member of the community. She chaired the Belleville Transit Commission, was a trustee on the Hastings County Board of Education for 20 years, Elder at Bridge Street United Church and Chair of the Tri-School Board Transportation Amalgamation Committee.
As a leader she shows foresight but is always ready to listen to other viewpoints before committing herself to a line of action. In every job Marylea has undertaken she has made improvements. Her commitment to the goals of CFUW, energy, enthusiasm, persistence, the love of a job well done and her outgoing personality will be great assets in the position as CFUW National President.

Brenda Wallace possesses the leadership qualities, experience, and motivation necessary to serve as the national President of CFUW.

Her colleagues in CFUW Regina consider her outstanding leadership qualities to be the following. She:

o Is well organized, listens to others, plans and keeps to a schedule. She has the ability to oversee a project, calmly and confidently to completion.
o Delegates effectively by mobilizing the strengths of members. She coordinated the CFUW National Annual General Meeting in Regina in 2004.

Brenda has served CFUW for many years. With CFUW Regina she has held the offices of President twice, Vice President, membership, archives, and has been a member of the club Scholarship Committee. As well, she was an active participant in fund-raising activities such as the gala dinner, celebrity fashion shows, silent auctions, and garage sales.

Brenda has served as President of Saskatchewan Council and Vice-President of the Prairies with dedication and perseverance. She attended the National CFUW Annual General Meetings in Wolfville (2003), Regina (2004), Oakville (2005), Vancouver (2007), Montreal (2008), and Winnipeg (2009).

For 25 of her 35 years as a public school teacher, Brenda supervised interns for the Faculty of Education, University of Regina.

Living and working in Germany for three years enabled Brenda to travel in Europe. Further travel to Egypt, Morocco, China, Japan, Bali, Mexico and the Caribbean enriched her understanding of other people and cultures in the world.

Youthful, energetic, and unencumbered by immediate family responsibilities, Brenda is ready and prepared to be a dynamic agent of positive change as President of CFUW.

CFUW NATIONAL PROPOSED CHANGES TO BY-LAWS

A new Governance Model for the CFUW national was unveiled on August 27, 2009, and the following amendments to the now existing By-Laws were proposed in order to allow for the adoption of that new model. We are posting these proposed changes for you to examine at your leisure. A committee, which has been appointed by the Executive, will examine and discuss these proposed amendments, and the findings and recommendations of this committee will be presented at the January general meeting. At that time, there will be a vote on these amendments from the membership.

and Chair of the CFUW Charitable Trust. The Treasurer shall be responsible for the supervision of the financial affairs of CFUW. She shall see that full and accurate accounts are kept of all receipts and disbursements, and all monies are deposited in the name and to the credit of CFUW.

The Treasurer shall be responsible for CFUW's securities and valuable effects, and direct the

investment or reinvestment of any funds of CFUW in Trustee Investments. Cheques shall be

signed by any one of the following: the Treasurer, the President, a Vice-President, or the Executive Director.

The Treasurer shall be responsible for an annual report from the auditors being submitted to the Board of Directors. The Treasurer, before assuming her duties, shall furnish a bond, at the expense of CFUW, the amount of such bond to be approved by the Board of Directors.

The Treasurer shall make extraordinary disbursements only when authorized to do so by the Voting Body at an Annual General Meeting or by approval of the CFUW Voting Body by a mail vote. A two-thirds affirmative vote of the Voting Body shall be required for such approval.

1.5.3 The Vice President of Finance shall serve as the Treasurer, as Chair of the Finance Committee and Chair of the CFUW Charitable Trust. The Treasurer shall be responsible for the supervision of the financial affairs of CFUW. She shall see that full and accurate accounts are kept of all receipts and disbursements, and all monies are deposited in the name and to the credit of CFUW.

The Treasurer shall be responsible for CFUW's securities and valuable effects, and direct the investment or reinvestment of any funds of CFUW in Trustee Investments. Cheques shall be signed by any one of the following: the Treasurer, the President, a Vice-President, or the Executive Director.

1.5.4 The Director of Strategic Planning shall be the Corporate Secretary. The Corporate

Secretary shall be custodian of the corporate seal, which shall be kept at National Office.

The Chair or any Committee member may be replaced for just cause at the discretion of the Board of Directors.

2.2 The Constitution, By-Laws and Standing Rules Committee shall be responsible for receiving and drafting amendments as outlined in By-Law XIX and for preparation of the amended Constitution, By-Laws and Standing Rules as passed by the CFUW Voting Body. Further duties of the committee are set forth in the Standing Rules.

CFUW celebrates Diamond year

CFUW Oakville will celebrate its 60th anniversary with A Diamond Affair on Friday, October 16 at Otello's Banquet Hall.

The celebration will feature a cocktail reception, three-course dinner, musical entertainment by members of the Halton Youth Symphony and Sheridan musical theatre.

Special guest for the evening will be CFUW National President Patricia DuVal and there will be a silent auction.

This year, in recognition of its 60th anniversary, CFUW awarded a special scholarship of $5,000 to graduating Oakville student Nupur Dogra.

Through the years, in addition to awarding annual scholarships, CFUW has made contributions to the community including donating books to the public library; a school kidney testing program; 10 seats for the Oakville Performing Arts Centre and a batik hanging for the foyer; donations to the Oakville-Trafalgar Memorial Hospital (OTMH) palliative care project, Tele-touch and Halton Women's Place. In addition, Oakville Town Hall boasts a sculpture donated by CFUW.

The Diamond Affair is open the public.

Beyond Bloomsbury I - Special event at Edgemere

A unique meeting was held Tuesday night, September 22 for the Bloomsbury I Interest Group. John Oliver, President and CEO of Halton Healthcare Services was the guest speaker and he was accompanied by Bill Bailey, Vice-President of Redevelopment. The topic was "Caring Today, Growing for Tomorrow – an Introduction to the New Oakville Hospital". As the committee felt this was such a relevant and important topic we opened up our interest group for that evening to the first 100 CFUW members who replied to the invitation. We were thrilled to have 75 members and guests seated in the beautiful Music Room of the Edgemere Estate on Lakeshore Road.

John is an eloquent speaker and very passionate about his role as leader for this "New Oakville Hospital" that will be built at Dundas and Third Line. Construction is to begin in 2011 with the hope of opening a State of the Art Hospital by 2014 - 2015 to meet the urgent needs of our community's growing and aging population. The "New Oakville Hospital" will: Provide patient and family-centered care in a warm friendly atmosphere; offer 80% single rooms for privacy and infection control; be equipped with the latest technology; offer new and expanded services, like cancer care and diagnostic imaging; be on the leading edge of design and environmental sustainability; set a benchmark for healthcare services in a community hospital.

Light will be the predominant feature and use of specific architectural ways will bring it into the building. There will be pathways, water and flowers, gathering spaces, green spaces, and a conference auditorium and library. The focus will be patient-centered and the Emergency entrance will have the best signage and will provide volunteer valet parking.

In order for this event to have happened, many people are to be thanked for their support and cooperation.

Roberta Brooks inspires at CFUW Oakville September General Meeting

Roberta Brooks was the speaker Monday at the first meeting for the season of CFUW Oakville.

A member of CFUW since the early 1970s, Roberta has served at all levels of the organization. Just to give a small sample of her involvement: she served as President (1981-2) and Honorary President (1996-1999) here in Oakville, then as Council President Ontario (1988-90). She was Vice President at the national level and went on to the International scene as a member of the International Race Relations. Roberta served on the IFUW Council and attended the Triennial Conference in Yokohama (1985), the Council meeting in Geneva (1997) and was Minuting Secretary of the IFUW when it held its Triennial Conference in Graz (1995). Still active at both the national and international levels, she is one of a small number of the elite, a Life Member of our club. Who better to explain the history of this organization and tell about CFUW.

The following resolutions were adopted at the CFUW Annual General Meeting held in Winnipeg, Manitoba August 21-23, 2009.

They had originally been submitted to the Clubs in February, 2009 for comment and amendment, with the proposed amended resolutions further studied, debated and subsequently voted upon at the 2009 Annual General Meeting.

These Adopted Resolutions now become part of CFUW policy which can be used by Clubs, Provincial Councils and the National CFUW for future advocacy and action.

ADDRESSING CLIMATE CHANGE: GREENHOUSE GAS EMISSIONS

Proposed by CFUW Victoria

RESOLVED, That the Canadian Federation of University Women (CFUW), recognizing the serious threat to life on earth posed by climate change, urge all levels of government to act immediately to create a national climate action plan that would:

set strong short-term targets for reduction of greenhouse gas emissions, with the goal of achieving a 30% reduction below 1990 levels by 2020 and a reduction of 80% below 1990 levels by 2050;

utilize every power defined in the Canadian Constitution, including policy and program development, legislation and regulations, taxation mechanisms, legal enforcement, market incentives and inter-governmental agreements to support the achievement of this goal, and

provide ongoing support for research and education concerning all aspects of climate change.

RESOLVED, That CFUW urge the Government of Canada to reaffirm Canada's commitment to its signed international agreements on climate change, including the Kyoto Protocol, to ratify the successors to Kyoto, and to work with other countries to achieve reductions in greenhouse gas emissions to avert crisis in the global climate system.

EMPLOYMENT INSURANCE REFORM

Proposed by the CFUW Legislation Committee

RESOLVED, That the Canadian Federation of University Women (CFUW) urge the Government of Canada to reform the unemployment benefit program, currently called Employment Insurance, to:

make it responsive to changing employment realities, including but not restricted to:

reducing the waiting period,
expanding the eligibility criteria,
allowing part-time and contract workers access to unemployment benefits,
allowing self-employed to "opt-in" to the unemployment benefit programme; and

conduct ongoing and thorough gender based analyses with a view to correcting gender disparities in the current program.

PROMOTING FINANCIAL LITERACY IN CANADA

Proposed by University Women's Club of Montreal Inc.

RESOLVED, That "Financial Literacy" be recognized as an essential life-skill that includes amongst its critical components

Financial knowledge and understanding,
Financial skills and competence,
Financial decision-making responsibility,
Understanding credit and money management,
Understanding taxes, pensions and benefits and savings,
Understanding the legal and financial implications of one's civil status.

RESOLVED, That the Canadian Federation of University Women (CFUW) strongly support the immediate development and implementation of a national strategy for financial literacy, with public consultation.

RESOLVED, That the CFUW urge the federal, provincial and territorial governments to allocate resources to the promotion and implementation of a financial literacy program to be delivered to adults of all ages and all circumstances by government agencies, employers and not-for-profit community organizations.

PROTECTING THE HEALTH OF CANADIANS BY REDUCING ENVIRONMENTAL TOXINS

Proposed by CFUW Ottawa

RESOLVED, That the Canadian Federation of University Women (CFUW) urge the Government of Canada and provincial, territorial and municipal governments to protect the health of Canadians by reducing their exposure to environmental toxins through measures that:

strengthen and enforce regulations that require all those who produce, use, distribute, and/or disseminate toxic or potentially toxic materials to show due diligence to protection of human health and the environment;

require producers/importers to provide evidence to regulatory authorities that a product will not threaten health nor the environment before it can be approved for import and use in Canada; that this evidence meets Canadian and international standards; that precautionary decision-making is applied throughout the process;

promote and require producer responsibility at every stage of product life, including waste management during manufacture, packaging, distribution and final product disposal;

enhance monitoring programs and research into effective control of the distribution, dissemination, disposal and offshore discharge of environmental toxins; and

promote public awareness and education, and support the development and use of safe alternatives.

One-Room School Houses in Ottawa Valley -- CFUW Kanata Vice President starts new book project

After being inspired by the CFUW Sherbrooke members who wrote "Days to Remember: One-Room Schoolhouses in the Eastern Townships of Quebec", Joy Forbes decided to start her own book project about the history of one-room schoolhouses in the Ottawa Valley.

In her interviews, she has come across some Rules for Bytown Teachers, dating back to 1872. Among the rules:
- Men teachers may take one evening each week for courting purposes, or two evenings a week if they go to church regularly.
- After ten hours in school, the teacher may spend the remaining time reading the Bible or other good books.
- Women teachers who marry or engage in unseemly conduct will be dismissed.

CFUW NIAGARA FALLS is pleased to invite members of all Southern
Ontario CFUW Clubs to attend our 2009 Fall Gathering in scenic Niagara
Falls, Ontario.

The meetings and workshops will take place at the Americana Conference
Resort and Spa, 8444 Lundy's Lane, Niagara Falls, ON. Visit

This year's theme, FUN IN YOUR CLUB, will focus on sharing the best
ideas in your club. The objectives are to provide you with an
opportunity to network at the regional level and to develop leadership

Trusts, Finance, IFUW and Advocacy in CFUW clubs. The afternoon
session provides an opportunity to share your Club's ideas on
fundraising, membership, programmes and advocacy. Please bring copies
of your Club's programmes and newsletters and any other material you
may wish to share.

The Keynote Speaker is the author and cartoonist of "BETWEEN FRIENDS",
Sandra Bell-Lundy, who manages to bring FUN into everyday life through
her daily comic strip.

WORKSHOPS

SESSION ONE:

GROUP A: Roberta Brooks will convene a workshop on How the CFUW
Charitable Trust and CFUW Fellowships Program work together to support
post-graduate study for Canadian women. Hear about the history of
these two facets of CFUW, how they work together, and how you and your
Club can give graduate women the opportunity for further study and
research and have fun doing it.

GROUP B: Membership dues paid to a local club connects each member to
FUNdamental costs if a difference is to be made. Join Lynn Franklin,
Director of Finance and Chair of the CFUW Charitable Trust as she
shares information about her finance portfolio.

SESSION TWO:

Relations, will speak on CFUW's work within the International
Federation of University Women (IFUW), its representation at the UN
Commission on the Status of Women meetings in New York City, and its
action on issues. Her interactive presentation will include
information, photos and tips for Clubs. Have fun in your Club while
making the world a better place.

GROUP B: CFUW Burlington will convene a workshop entitled Why
Advocacy? Can I make a difference?

Greetings CFUW Oakville Members!

I just cannot wait to share some happy news with you today.

Last night at the open meeting with Lawrence Hill as speaker, we charged $10 for guests and members of the public. I am giddy to report to you that we had 68 guests and visitors for a total of $680 for the scholarship fund!

Thank you to all those who helped this happen so quickly. Thanks also to the members who stepped forward to suggest that we open the meeting.

We aim to please most of the people most of the time.

CFUW Oakville Meeting Reminder - April 20th

Dear CFUW Oakville Members,

This is a reminder about our general meeting on Monday night April 20th.In the newsletter we explained that the speaker portion of the meeting will be open to the public.

We will have our usual social hour and refreshments beginning at 7 pm. Anyone who is not a member will be charged $10 which will go to our Scholarship fund. This includes any guest you might bring with you to the social hour or any member of the public. The general public will be admitted after 7:30 when author Lawrence Hill will be selling and signing books. Lawrence Hill will be introduced and speak at 8 pm.

Following the speaker and questions, the general public will be invited to leave so that we may conduct our business meeting in which we have the vote regarding this year's CFUW Resolutions. The resolutions will be displayed and read aloud and then we will vote. There will be no discussion. We urge you to stay and contribute to this important use of the club.

Tickets will be on sale at the meeting for the May Annual General Meeting and Dinner to be held May 11th at the Oakville Golf Club on 6th Line. Otherwise they are available from:

On Monday, April 20, 2009, the author of The Book of Negroes – the recent winner of CBC’s Radio One annual literary contest, Canada Reads – Lawrence Hill will speak at the Canadian Federation of University Women (CFUW)–Oakville’s general meeting. Hill’s talk on “Faction: Merging Fiction and History in Writing The Book of Negroes,” will be open to the public for a fee of $10.00.
With the recent media buzz, it is hard to find anyone who hasn’t read, is reading, or intends to read Hill’s third novel, which was released in 2007. It relies on a blend of history and fiction to tell the compelling story of Aminata, who, in the 1700s, is abducted as a child from her village in West Africa and shipped to South Carolina by slave traders. Over the course of the novel, Aminata is transformed into a storyteller extraordinaire. She spins the astonishing tale of her remarkable travels from Africa to America and back again. A sojourn in Nova Scotia illuminates a long-neglected chapter in Canadian history.

As part of her story, Aminata registers her name in the historic “Book of Negroes,” an actual document which provides a short but immensely revealing record of freed Loyalist slaves who requested permission to leave the US for resettlement in Nova Scotia.
The Book of Negroes won the Rogers Writers’ Trust Fiction Prize and was awarded the Commonwealth Writers’ Prize for Best Book in 2008. It was published as Someone Knows My Name in the U.S., where it has proven equally popular.
Hill is the author of Any Known Blood (1997) and Some Great Thing (1992), and a best-selling memoir, Black Berry, Sweet Juice: On Being Black and White in Canada (2001). He also co-authored, with Joshua Key, the non-fiction book, The Deserter's Tale: The Story of an Ordinary Soldier Who Walked Away from the War in Iraq.

Because seating needs to be arranged in advance, non-members who plan to attend are requested to send an email to the CFUW Oakville mailbox: cfuwoakville@yahoo.ca and provide numbers.

The meeting will be held at the Banquet Hall of the International Union of Operating Engineers (2245 Speers Road, west of Third Line). The agenda will be: 7:00 p.m., members-only social hour; 7:30 p.m. doors open to the public; 8:00 p.m. meeting start.
